Pediatric Dental Emergencies
While we hope for smooth dental experiences, emergencies can arise, and preparation is key. For any concerns about your child’s teeth or mouth, reach out to our office without hesitation. Explore below for a list of common emergencies:
Knocked out permanent tooth
This emergency requires IMMEDIATE dental attention. Call our office IMMEDIATELY and page the doctor on call if it is after hours. Locate the tooth, handle the tooth ONLY by the crown of the tooth (not the root), gently rinse off any debris, and try to re-implant the tooth into the socket if able within the first 15 minutes. If unable to, please head do the emergency room or our office if you have spoken with the doctor on call
Loose space maintainer
If a space maintainer becomes loose, you can try to remove it if it comes out easily. If it does not, gently push it back into place and call the office to schedule an appointment to have it re-cemented.Â
Toothache
Make sure area is clean – brush, floss, rinse with warm salt water. Provide Tylenol or ibuprofen as needed. Call the office to schedule your child for an appointment to be evaluated. If you notice a pimple or bubble along the gums, this is a sign of an infection and should be addressed.
Chipped tooth
If your child chips their tooth, evaluate for any bleeding or if the tooth is loose at all. Please call the office and we will help advise you if it is urgent or if we need to schedule an appointment.
